Mafalda Patuleia is Head of the Tourism Department at Universidade Lusófona, where she also serves as Director of the Bachelor’s Degree in Tourism and the Master’s Degree in Development and Management of Tourism Destinations. She is a researcher at INTREPID Lab – Research for Business and Society and at GOVCOPP – Research Unit on Governance, Competitiveness and Public Policies, University of Aveiro.

She holds a degree in Tourism from INP – Instituto Superior de Novas Profissões, a Master’s degree in Communication, Culture and Information Technologies from ISCTE – University Institute of Lisbon, and a PhD in Tourism from the University of Algarve. Her doctoral research focused on residential tourism, integrated resorts and tourism motivations, particularly in the context of the West region of Portugal.

With more than 24 years of teaching experience in the field of Tourism, Mafalda Patuleia has developed an academic career combining teaching, research and programme coordination. She has contributed to scientific knowledge through publications in indexed journals, book chapters, conference proceedings, case studies and working papers.

Her research focuses on Tourism Management, Tourism Destinations and Sustainable Tourism Development, with particular interest in lifestyle entrepreneurship, second homes, short-term rentals and destination competitiveness. Her work explores the social, economic and territorial dimensions of tourism, contributing to a better understanding of how tourism activities influence destinations and communities.
