Manuel José Simões Loureiro, PhD, is an Associate Professor of Mathematics and Statistics at Lusófona University, with teaching activities at the School of Economic and Organizational Sciences and the Faculty of Engineering. He is also a researcher associated with INTREPID LAB – Research for Business and Society, developing research and teaching activities at the intersection of mathematics, logic, computation and the analysis of social and political issues.
He holds a PhD in Mathematics from the University of Seville, completed in 2016, with specialisation in Mathematical Logic, Computation and Artificial Intelligence. He also holds a DEA in Logic, Computation and Artificial Intelligence from the University of Seville, as well as a Dr. Phil. in History of Philosophy and Logic from the University of Jena and a degree/master's in Philosophy and Logic and Methodology of Science from Saint Petersburg State University.
His research focuses primarily on Mathematical Logic, Set Theory, Computability and Reverse Mathematics, while his broader academic interests include Mathematics Education and the application of mathematical and logical approaches to the analysis of social and political matters. His recent research includes work on Lipschitz and Wadge games, determinacy principles and second-order arithmetic.
He has also held several academic and institutional positions, including Director of ISPO, President of the Technical-Scientific Council of ISPO, Deputy Director of the Research and Publications Center of ESE Almeida Garrett, and consultant to the European Parliament, contributing to areas related to science and research policy, equal opportunities and social and labour non-discrimination.
